Fair-Time Notes & Reminders

Tulsa State Fair Oct 1-11, 2015
Every fall our quiet little neighborhood becomes ground zero for the fun and festivities that are the Tulsa State Fair.
While most visitors come and go without incident, here are some tips for coping with the crowds:
  • Mayo Meadow Neighborhood Assn. (MMNA) has worked with the City for the last ten years to control parking and crowds in the neighborhood during the Fair. It is important that you communicate with the City immediately if you see any laws being broken or your property abused.
  • Neighbors in the far northern part of the neighborhood will receive a letter about restrictions and regulations during this time. But if you see problems in any part of the neighborhood, call the cops.
  • If possible, park your cars in the driveway and lock them.
  • If you have to park on the street, do not leave any valuables visible and lock your car.
  • Fair visitors are not allowed to block access to your driveway or any other part of your property. Call the police immediately if you find yourself in this situation. The offending car will be towed and ticketed.
  • Leave your porch light or front hall light on in the evening
  • Tuck your lawn furniture and other valuables away if they are in the front or side yards.
  • About a week before the Fair a “no right turn” sign will mysteriously appear at 21st and Pittsburg. For those of us who routinely make right turns at the corner the rest of the year, be prepared to be surprised and ticketed.
  • If you can find an alternative route during the Fair, it might be quicker to take that route, as traffic will increase in the neighborhood about a week before the Fair as vendors and other businesses will be coming to the area.

Looking for Gardeners!

Mayo Meadow needs 5 volunteers to help us put our best foot forward for our community. Our neighborhood gardens at the entry gates at 27th and Pittsburg and 27th and Vandalia need a little TLC.

Maurie Traylor, a neighbor and professional gardener and landscaper is looking for volunteers to work on the evenings of Thursday, Sept. 10th and Sept. 17th for about 2 hours each evening.

This could be a great opportunity for you to obtain extra credit for community projects or even learn about drought resistant gardening from a gardening pro.

Email Maurie at novelgardener@gmail.com by Sept. 8th if you would like to help beautify our neighborhood. MMNA will supply the materials.

All those participating will receive ONE free packet of certified organic seeds perfect for beginning your own garden.

Here are the tasks needed:
  • Trim back all unwanted growth
  • Remove any dead or diseased plants
  • Remove all weeds - really bad on the Vandalia garden
  • Re-apply mulch
  • Re-plant any perennials needed
We are also looking for volunteers to help keep the gardens watered during the fall and winter.

FREE HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION

Many everyday products such as paint and lawn chemicals can be dangerous if used or stored improperly and cause serious environmental damage if tossed in the trash or poured down the drain. The M.e.t.’s biannual Fairgrounds Pollutant Collection event at the Tulsa State Fairgrounds is the only free opportunity in Tulsa to dispose of your household hazardous waste properly.

Storing even a half-bottle of drain cleaner makes your home, neighborhood, and planet a little less safe. If you have to use chemicals, buy what you need and use them up. If you have some left over take them to our semiannual Fairgrounds Pollutant Collection.

WHEN: March 28 – 29 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

WHERE: Tulsa State Fairgrounds.

Transport pollutants to the event in the trunk of a car or the bed of a pick-up truck. Trained volunteers will remove the household pollutants from your vehicle for you.

Items Accepted Include: household cleaners, pesticides, fertilizers, automotive fluids, cooking oil, batteries, all fluorescent light bulbs, small ammunition, smoke alarms, aerosol paint, hobby paint, pool chemicals, items containing mercury, gasoline, and unused or out-of-date prescription medications.

Items NOT Accepted at the Event: latex paint, tires, computers, radioactive waste and commercial waste. Latex paint is not accepted because it is not hazardous. It is water-based and can safely
disposed of by being dried out. Remove the lid and let the paint completely dry. Tulsa residents can place two cans of dry paint next to regular residential trash for pick up.

Spring 2015: 10th Annual Neighborhood Block Party - TBA
July 2015:     Dumpster Days - date TBA

MMNA is 10 years old and celebrating our successes! Please read what MMNA does for the neighborhood and why we need your continued financial support! Donations can be directed to MMNA Board of Directors (BOD) listed below. MMNA is funded ONLY by donations.

MMNA Promotes Neighborhood Safety and Security
Mayo Meadow is one of the safest neighborhoods in Tulsa according to Bart Dean, National Crime Prevention Network (CPN) Tulsa Coordinator.
  • Over the last 10 years, MMNA has sponsored Alert Neighbors Meetings, purchased "Alert Neighbors" street signs and "We Call Police" signs for all parts of the neighborhood.
  • In 2011 MMNA helped form a Citizens Alert Patrol (CAP) of 10 of your neighbors to patrol the MM neighborhood, giving us higher alert status with the Tulsa Police Dept (TPD).
  • MMNA has coordinated with the TPD, City Neighborhood Inspectors, and the Fairgrounds staff to control both parking and property crimes during the Fair and other large events.
MMNA Encourages Communication Among Neighbors
  • MMNA Newsletters
    • MMNA funds the printing of a fall and spring newsletter and organizes neighbors to distribute newsletters to every home in the neighborhood (approx. 1,000 residences).
    • Provides electronic copies of the newsletter and event notices by request, contact BOD member Larry Synar to subscribe: larrystsa@yahoo.com
  • Social Media
    • BOD members, Maggie Brown and Shamone Hubbert, administer the MM Facebook page. Our neighbor, Michel Shimp, is a founding member of nextdoor.com. Both sites provide neighborhood awareness, contacts, and updates.
  • Annual Neighborhood Block Party
    • Funding, organizing, and publicizing the annual spring block party, a mixer for the whole neighborhood. Provide surveys at the block party for neighbors' suggestions.
  • Business and Special Meetings
    • Organizing and publicizing business special meetings to discuss neighborhood needs and projects, i.e. Alert Neighbors, meeting with Fairgrounds staff and TPD.

MMNA Coordinates Activies for the Neighborhood, Yearly
  • Free Dumpsters
    • MMNA arranges for free dumpsters each summer for the whole neighborhood. Dumpsters are only provided by the City to neighborhood associations in good standing.
  • Annual Neighborhood Garage Sale
    • MMNA purchases a classified ad in the Tulsa World so neighbors can just move their sale items outside without having to advertise individually. MMNA also purchased four banners, designed and installed by our neighbor, Matt Smith, at the four corners of the neighborhood to serve as a reminder about the neighborhood garage sale date.
  • Spring Neighborhood Block Party and Meetings
    • MMNA sponsors the spring neighborhood block part, business and special meetings on topics of interest to the neighborhood.
Keeping our Neighborhood Beautiful and Well-Known
  • History and Transformation
    • Before 2005, MM wasn't really a place with a name! Our neighborhood was just though of as the "parking annex for the Fairgrounds" or "the neighborhood south of the Fairgrounds"
    • The Nidiffer family, owners of the Mayo Meadow Shopping Center, gave permission to use the name Mayo Meadow for the new association, as the old shopping center was being demolished.
  • In 2005, Mayo Meadow became a neighborhood name instead of a shopping center
    • While other, smaller associations had been formed in the past, the current association was the consolidation of several small subdivisions and older associations.
    • MM boundaries are from Pittsburgh to Yale Aves, and 21st to 29th St.
  • Award Winning Entry Gates at 21st and Pittsburgh and 21st and Vandalia Aves
    • In 2006, MMNA BOD members won a Tulsa Vision 2025 Grant. The city paid to build entrance gates from the pink flagstone harvested from the MM Shopping Center before demolition, and to landscape them.
    • In 2009, MMNA won a Tulsa Historic Preservation Commission Award for the entry gates project.
    • MMNA funds and organizes a volunteer effort to plant, tend and water the entrance gates gardens.
    • Maurie Traylor, former BOD member and professional gardener, designed a year around sustainable growth garden with drought resistance plants.
If you believe that "Charity Begins at Home," help us keep our neighborhood safe and beautiful with your donation, no matter how small. Donations of any size, as well as questions about MMNA, can be directed to President Jeanie Newell. 2644 S Sandusky Ave, 74114.

Volunteers Needed for Neighborhood Mayo Meadow (MMNA) Crime Prevention
MMNA Citizen Alert Patrol (CAP) is forming. A training and organizational meeting will be held on Thursday night, Sept 22 from 6-8 p.m. at Memorial Baptist Church. The association will provide a light dinner for volunteers at 6:00.

Crime Prevention Tip from the Tulsa Police

Thieves have found a way to break into your vehicle which may go unnoticed for several days. They take valuable information and documents. If you have a GPS unit, they now know what you drive along with where you live. The next step may be a burglary of your residence. Here is how they are doing it: Thieves locate a parked vehicle having something of value inside. They use a punch tool on the passenger side door just below the handle to punch a small, almost unnoticeable hole in the door. They then gain access to the mechanism that unlocks the door. They unlock the door not setting off any alarm or creating any noise. Thieves get inside your vehicle and take electronic valuables. They also take a check or two from the middle of the check book and even will take one or two of your credit cards hoping it goes unnoticed. They then get into your GPS and find out what you have listed for "HOME". They'll leave the GPS in the car to reduce the likelihood that you'll realize that your car has been broken into. Already knowing what you drive, they can check to see if you are home and then break into your residence. These types of break ins are going unnoticed for several days. By the time you've discovered the crime, thieves may have already wiped out your bank account. Remove "HOME" from your GPS. Use a local business instead. Here is a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or hear someone trying to get into your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies. Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain.
