Mayo Meadow - Vision 2025 Project

A group of neighborhood residents has submitted a proposal to the city for a beautification project for the neighborhood entrance of 21st Street and Pittsburg Avenue, as well as to the traffic island located at 27th Street and Pittsburg north of the underpass at the Broken Arrow Expressway. The purpose of this project is to create an attractive neighborhood entrance and create a sense of neighborhood identity for our neighborhood. Our neighborhood is very prominently located considering our proximity to the fairgrounds, Expo Square, and the city’s most defining icon – the Golden Driller.

The funding for the project would come from the Vision 2025 package approved by voters in 2003. Under the Vision 2025 guidelines, neighborhood groups are asked to present their projects to the city, which would consider the merits of each project. Once a project idea is accepted by the city, the Public Works and Development Department will implement the project.

The Mayo Meadow neighborhood proposal calls for the construction of two signs (approximately four feet tall and six feet wide) on the city easements on both sides of Pittsburg at 21st Street. The signs would be constructed from “pink” flagstone, the style of which was a hallmark of the recently demolished Mayo Meadow Shopping Center. Use of this historic style would be homage to the architectural style that defined the era when the neighborhood was first constructed. The stone signs would include 12-inch brushed aluminum lettering on the east sign that reads: “Mayo Meadow.”

The proposal also calls for allocating funds for landscaping the areas around the signs, as well as the traffic median at 27th & Pittsburg.

Many thanks to Carol Holly, Larry Synar, and Jeanie Newell for their work in developing the plans and architectural drawings of the proposed signs and working through the Vision 2025 neighborhood project application process.
