Mayo Meadow Newsletter for March

Next Neighborhood Meeting, March 8

The next Mayo Meadow Neighborhood Association meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Thursday, March 8, at the Memorial Baptist Church, 2900 S. Yale. Refreshments will be provided by the new Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market at 21st and Yale. Store manager Cheryl Miner plans to attend to talk about the store. A brief business meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. with topics including neighborhood parking, traffic issues, Vision 2025 and more.

Mark Your Calendar -- Saturday, April 14 – Neighborhood-wide garage sale. MMNA will provide a classified ad for the Saturday event. You may want to provide signs to direct visitors to your address. Last year, we had more than a dozen sales in the neighborhood and drew a lot of bargain hunters. Join the fun and get rid of all that stuff! (Rain date scheduled for Saturday, April 21.)

Fair Parking Survey. The MMNA has prepared a survey to learn more about neighborhood parking issues related to the State Fair. The survey is available online. Paper copies of the survey will be available at the March 8th MMNA meeting. Survey results will be compiled and distributed via the Web site and the next edition of the MMNA Messenger. One survey response per household, please. Responses are due by March 15.

MMNA attends Tulsa County fairgrounds meeting regarding traffic and parking. Regarding. Fairgrounds officials hosted an Oct. 25 meeting to allow neighbors to voice their opinions regarding fairgrounds operations. Mayo Meadow residents were well-represented and presented officials presents with several ideas that would encourage smoother traffic flow in the area during the fair and other large events. County officials said that were looking for options to add more on-site parking to help alleviate the overflow neighborhood parking. Allowing cars to be parked in neighbor’s yards was an issue that was addressed. MMNA has formed a committee to review the issue. (See the MMNA web site for more details on this meeting.)

MMNA board members participate in Nov. 20 Neighborhood Leadership Meeting held by our City Councilor Maria Barnes. Bev Clark and Frank Mulhern voiced MMNA concerns, including: Traffic/parking during the Fair:Mr. Kevin Cox (City’s Inspections Dept.) and Major Williams (Tulsa Police Dept.) discussed the difficulties with enforcement during the 2006 Fair. They encouraged the MMNA to work closely with Ms. Barnes and the City well in advance of the 2007 Fair to address these issues; condition of the BA underpass at Pittsburg: State Rep. Jeannie McDaniel was instrumental in having the city clean this area and remove the graffiti before the 2006 Fair. The area still needs tree pruning and fence repair and sidewalk maintenance; and dead pigeons at BA underpass: Major Williams reported that someone had been poisoning pigeons at multiple sights around town. He said that the overpass at 27th & Pittsburg was poisoned repeatedly, and the culprit had not been identified.

Neighborhood Crime Stats. MMNA requested information from the Tulsa Police Dept. about neighborhood crime. Between Jan. 1 and Oct. 21, 2006, 60 crimes were reported in our neighborhood: auto theft, 9; burglary from vehicle, 16; felony assault, 4; homicide, 0; larceny, 13: residential burglary, 11; robbery, 0; sexual assault, 0; and vandalism, 7. Our neighborhood policemen say these stats are VERY good compared to other parts of the city. Sherry Strong (724-6544) is the coordinator of the MMNA Alert Neighbors Committee.

The web site will bring up a map of your neighborhood with small colored boxes on it. The small house icon represents your address; the colored boxes represent sex offenders in your area. Click on the colored boxes and it will bring up the offender's photograph and the locations, names and employers. Click ALL AROUND, you will be amazed at the information you get! Tulsa Police officer a similar service with their crime mapping at www.tulsapolice.org/mapcentral.html

If anyone wants to get an idea of home values in our area, they can go to www.zillow.com. This is a good site to determine value of your property and those around you.

The annual Block party held at Memorial Baptist Church on Saturday Sept 16 provided a clown who designed balloon bouquets and animals, arts and crafts for the kids, and lots of ice cream and soda for everyone! Fireman from Station 21 provided a fire truck for inspection and a police cruiser arrived too. Jesse Guardiola and Jeannie McDaniel, candidates for Oklahoma House of Representatives, came to visit with neighbors about what was important to them. A survey of those attending indicated that crime, traffic control (speeding and parking) and neighbors not keeping up their property were the most important issues for the neighborhood.
