Meeting to Discuss Fairgrounds Annexation

From Sunday's Tulsa World:
County Commissioner Randi Miller will hold a public meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday to discuss issues related to the fairgrounds.

The meeting will be in the cafeteria at the east end of the Exposition Center.

Among the topics for discussion will be the city's proposed annexation of the fairgrounds, ongoing construction at the site and parking.

Miller said members of the Tulsa County Public Facilities Authority, which operates the fairgrounds, will be in attendance, as well as state Rep. Jeannie McDaniel, D-Tulsa, and Expo Square President and CEO Rick Bjorklund.

Miller, who is chairwoman of the fair board, began holding the quarterly meetings late last year to get the public's input on operations at the fairgrounds and to update people about activities there.

The meeting is not limited to residents who live near the fairgrounds, she said, and the public is free to address any issue related to the fairgrounds.

If you are interested in voicing your thoughts regarding the proposed annexation of the fairgrounds, please make plans to attend the meeting.

In addition, MMNA Jeanie Newell reports that a public hearing on the matter will be held at 6:0 p.m., Thursday, April 5, in the Francis Campbell Room, Plaza Level, at the Tulsa Civic Center downtown.

The hearing at the April 5th City Council meeting is far more important for Mayo Meadow residents to attend. The annexation decision will be made by the City Council at that meeting, and they need to hear from us that we support annexation.

Annexation would bring the Fairgrounds under the City's noise ordinances and zoning authority, and that is crucial for the quality of life of our neighbors who live nearest the Fairgrounds.

We don't know yet what the County will do with the land where Bell's is. If the City annexes the Fairgrounds, the City Board of Adjustment and the City Council will have the final say over zoning changes there. If annexation fails, the County will make those decisions as they have in the past -- without input from our representatives at City Hall.

You can read more about the case for annexation in my March 7 column in Urban Tulsa Weekly. There are links to other stories on the topic at this entry on my blog.
